Back when, Mazda promised a diesel model was on its way. Then, we heard nothing. Frankly, we expected that it wouldn't make it to the US, given the increased difficulty in getting diesel passenger cars certified in the post-Volkswagen-scandal era.
But today at the 2019 New York International Auto Show, Mazda announced that the diesel-powered CX-5 is here. The long-awaited diesel is a 2.2-liter four-cylinder with twin sequential turbochargers, making 168 horsepower and a massive 290 lb-ft of torque. The diesel will only be offered in the top-of-the-line CX-5, the all-wheel drive Signature model, priced at $41,000. That's over $4000 more than equivalent CX-5 Signature with the 2.5-liter turbo gas engine. The diesel gets an EPA-estimated 27 mpg in the city, 30 on the highway, 28 combined. That's better than the all-wheel drive gas model, though a CX-5 with the 2.5-liter naturally aspirated gas engine and front-wheel drive manages 25 mpg in the city, 31 highway and 28 combined.Mazda will be one of when the optional engine arrives. All the German brands have discontinued their US diesels, leaving only Jaguar-Land Rover and GM building non-pickup diesels. In the CX-5's segment, the twinned Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain offer a 1.6-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder that gets up to 39 mpg highway per the EPA.Mazda for the US back in 2012, teasing a possible diesel-powered 6 sedan. The automaker had trouble getting its Skyactiv-D engine certified for sale in the US, and the 6 diesel was eventually canceled.
Now, finally, a diesel Mazda is here. The CX-5 Diesel Signature is available for pre-order right now.
