• How Do I Auto Populate Data In Excel Based On Another Cell?

I have read many posts about linking attributes with excel files but have yet been able to receive any help with what i'm trying to do, so any input would be greatly appreciated. I'm an engineer that works for a company that designs offshore drilling platforms. Currently i am generating electrical panel termination sheets (image attached) and i have to generate one for every junction box but i have several to do (several 100). What i want to do is link my excel junction box schedule (image attached) and set up my attributes in such a way that i input the originating or terminating device and the rest of the attributes auto populate based on my excel sheet. For example (view attached image as reference), i want to input 's-t4630', then i want my cable size (3x2.5mm2), and my cable id (t46-el-2005-01) to generate. I know exactly what you're trying to do.

I used to work for an engineering company where we would create hundreds of drawings, P&IDs, electrical drawings, PFDs (with H&MBs). All of these drawings we were able to extract data, compare, identify discrepancies, and then auto populate the data back to the drawings once discrepancies had been resolved. Some of the spreadsheets we used worked to simply populate drawings for the first time if they were new drawings. Since I don't work for them any more, I will have to look through my archives to see if I can find some of those spreadsheets again. I remember being able to look at the visual basic code with my very limited knowledge of VB and be able to modify it for any block on any drawing(s).I'm currently working on a project where I could really use those spreadsheets again, so I will be looking for them anyway. Well, I didn't find my excel sheet, but I did a little looking around the internet and found a something that works even better! In the Express menu, Blocks - Export Attribute Information, you can export all the blocks from a drawing.

Then using Excel, you can view the resultant.txt file. You can make any edits you want to the data and then in the Express menu, Blocks - Import Attribute Information, you can import the information back into the blocks.You will have to select all the blocks that you want to export information for, but if you just select all blocks in a drawing, you can then filter the blocks you don't want in Excel and create another.txt file with only the blocks you did want. You are populating a unique block that is identified by it's handle. If you add or copy a block, a new handle is created for the new object (block). All you have to do is export the information again to get the new handle and attribute information.This is much easier than what I was doing trying to edit the VB in my Excel file with my very limited knowledge of VB. The end user would have to be a CAD user to update this information.I would like to see CAD allow for data linking, as oppose to import/export functionality. This way users that only have access to excel can update the information that would auto update in CAD once the file is reopened.The export/import function is only good for batch updating.
